The Amazing Miracle Fruit

Picture
(Synsepalum dulcificum) Miracle fruit is an evergreen shrub that can also be trained as a standard tree. This truly amazing plant produces tiny red berries that when the pulp is eaten, turns sour foods sweet. The pulp tricks the taste buds to make lemons taste sweet as lemonade.

People enjoy getting together and having fun at parties with the fruit. Imagine tasting a little sip of balsamic vinegar and enjoying it as a delicious sweet wine! The effects of the fruit can last from 30 minutes to as much as an hour.

The Miracle Fruit Plant can make a great house plant and a terrific addition to any exotic plant collection. The plant grows best in filtered light away from direct sunlight. Outdoors the plants average five feet but may over many years grow as tall as twelve to fifteen feet high.

Most growers propagate Miracle Fruit from seed so some variation exists. We offer plants produced from cuttings of superior mother plants. Our mother plants bear heavy fruit containing the highest concentration of the protein Miraculin.

Seedlings bear in about 18 months. A seedling that is less than eight inches tall could be a year old. When planting  seeds the germination can take up to 16 weeks.  In general these plants are very slow growers. Growing this plant from cuttings takes considerable skill and the right growing conditions. Plants propagated from cuttings often produce much quicker. It has taken us several years of research and hands on experience to learn the finer points of growing superior clones from cuttings. Miracle Fruit plants grown from cuttings often fruit  sooner than seedlings.

As an indoor plant, provide it with bright light such as a well lit window. In the summer the plant can be moved with care to a warm, lightly shaded spot. Your plant will grow best if kept moist and occasionally misted to keep a little humidity around it. Be sure to use an acid based fertilizer because they love an average pH of 5.5.  We recommend fertilizers that are used on Azaleas, Gardenias etc.
